Ok, so DTE turned 400 in January. When it began, in 1992, no one gave it more than a few issues to survive…

I joined in 2002, and apart from a year and a bit of break in between, it’s been a fun ride. First a photograper, then a designer. It’s a great place to learn and grow, if you want to.

The old DTE website will soon get a make over too, we’ll be hosting fresh new stories, not found in the print version. So that will be fun. And we have an exhibiton lied up for early Feb. Once we decided on the paper, needed a new advert. Our earlier ads featured the chlorine-free papers.

The graphic wasn’t as difficult as I imagined, though i do feel I’ve cheated a bit, the folds should have led to inverted text. But there’s that much one can play around with a masthead. Unless you’re NatGeo, or Time

Down to Earth goes recycled, post September 15th

Another last day scramble for a cover. The original idea was my managing editor Pradip’s, pages from a alphabet learning book, concept of relearning what we know about these animals. The idea evolved into the above, essentially because I only found a L=Lion page (T=telephone), and a Tiger drawing on a wall in Bandhavgarh. Combined these two images to create the cover.

Can’t believe that it hasn’t released in Delhi, or have I missed it? I’m such a loser

I wanted a single colour to theme this cover story.

What is the colour that best represents conflict, resistance? I couldn’t find anything better than Red.

Is this story about the Maoists? the Naxals? or the CPI? No, but it looks like it is. Why? Because its Red.

That was a problem, but not if we chose to ignore it. We did, and went ahead…but it got me thinking

I have learnt that according to hindu mythology, saffron best represents war. But today,you know…

So, visually speaking, the story might be branded Leftist if I use red, and BJP if I use saffron. Think this makes for a deeper discussion on society, civilization, visual representation and its relationship with… but fuck it, read the story
